Gilman Fellowships
2002-Present
This series of annual scholarships, named for former Congressman Benjamin Gilman (R- NY), former chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, enabled, two graduate students in the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences pursuing Shakespeare studies in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University to travel to Stratford-upon-Avon.
Students undertook summer study under the auspices of The Shakespeare Centre. Upon their return, they submitted reflection letters and weekly journals of their experiences as well as photographs of educational opportunities to which they were exposed. The Gilman Fellowship Program provided endowment funding for graduate students who study Shakespeare, providing them with both academic year financial aid as well as summer fellowship at the Shakespeare Centre.
